An article published on UPI.com
titled “Saudis rev up plans for renewable energy” explains that Saudi Arabia
has ambitious plans to develop renewable energy plans which will produce 54,000
megawatts of electricity but 2032. This is about 19 years in the future but considering
the amount of energy they plan to produce from renewable sources, it is understandable.
Unfortunately oil (a non-renewable energy source) will still be harvested here,
but it will be sold to other countries instead of being used domestically.
The King
Abdallah Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-Care)
was founded in 2010 in order to develop alternative energy sources to
prevent the country from buring millions of barrels of oil a year creating
power. The KA-Care published the strategy paper that outlines the initial
phases of the kingdoms agenda for its energy future. The paper provides a blueprint for
sustainable energy projects but also lays out proposed targets for greater
local participation in the workforce, according to the Middle East Economic
Digest. Many think that this push for renewable energy is evidence that Riyadh
is thinking about the country’s long term future and is aware that its
hydrocarbons resources will not last forever. This plan will save 1.2 million
barrels of oil per day by 2032, compared to the 10 million barrels produced per
day currently in Saudi Arabia.
Neighboring
United Arab Emirates (which contain eight percent of the world’s proven oil
reserves) are also embarking on renewable energy programs; they are focusing on
nuclear and solar energy production. Arab states in the gulf (which have on
fifth of the world’s oil reserves) are beginning a green revolution in order to
transform their economies. MEED reported that “with peak power demand expected
to rise by more than sixty percent in the next twenty years, Saudi Arabia is
aware that it must swiftly move forward with power projects to avoid shortages…In
addition to the environmental concerns of building new capacity by burning
fossil fuels there will be major cost implications if the kingdom continues to
use gas and oil.” Saudi Arabia has realistically accepted that alternative
energy is a better option than non-renewable and laid out a plan to create
renewable energy sources.
